Join us for Folk Night at PHOENIX in Alameda. Learn more of the music acts:

Jacob Aranda was born and raised in rural Illinois. He learned to play the guitar from his brother. He learned to sing in church, and in his early musician days, he’d collaborated and performed with folk and traveling jazz groups around Chicago.

Jacob studied at The Chicago School of Violinmaking and then traveled to Siguenza, Spain in 2007 to study with iconic classical guitar maker Jose Luis Romanillos, regarded as “one of the greatest luthiers of the twentieth century.” As a craftsman and luthier, Jacob uses only hand tools, avoiding factory-made practices typical of mass-market instruments.

Vega Victoria’s indie-Americana debut EP The Long Embrace was produced and mixed by Ben Tanner, member of the Grammy-award winning band Alabama Shakes. Recorded at Sun Drop Sound in Florence, Alabama, The Long Embrace pulsates with that legendary Muscle Shoals sound and shimmers with intricate emotion. These are cinematic songs about love, longing, and being lost. It’s music for long, blue empty highways late at night and for close dancing with a stranger. Originally from Stockholm, Sweden, Vega Victoria divides her time between the East Bay and the Mojave desert in Southern California. www.vegavictoriamusic.com

Benjamin Winter’s folk roots have snuck their way back into his songs as he has matured as a singer-songwriter in recent years. Son of a cowboy & raised on old country & gospel, maybe the flavor should have presented itself earlier, but he has organically found himself within the embrace of the “Nu-Folk” movement (Lumineers, Mumford & Sons, Head & The Heart). Weaving playful lyrics with a social & soulful message, Benjamin just wants to figure out what we all have in common and sing you song about it.

Fast forward 21 years, thousands of shows, and more up’s & downs with music industry and bandmates than can be recalled, Benjamin operates with his outfit The Make Believe: an international rotating cast of cellos, guitars, keys, drums, bass, trumpets and vocalists. “Whoever I can afford or is bored enough to work for beer at the time ” says Benjamin. “I am a father of 3 now and it’s a paradigm shift of existence. Beautiful and Impossible to be who I was before. It’s an insightful chapter of this journey as a songwriter and giving me new stories to tell. Not about kids really, just the way I see the world differently now. Or try to see it through all the dirty diapers. Whatever. Just gotta keep singing.”

Collage! The surrealists and the poets loved the artform for its adsurdity and non-conforming principles. But in decades since it has fallen from radical artistic tool to a cute scrapbooking pastime. In this workshop you, the student, will learn how to make collages that honor the original form. The goal is for you to leave the class armed with the tools and understanding to keep exploring this rich medium. This workshop is taught by Thomas Young and Michael Tunk, two seasoned collage artists who share a studio here at Phoenix, and exhibit together throughout the Bay Area.

We’ll have a teaching/demonstration period in the beginning, where you will learn different cutting and gluing techniques, and then you’ll be turned loose to create your own artwork! Using vintage postcards as a starting point, you’ll be introduced to techniques in perspective, scale, and color matching, which will help you to make a well-constructed collage. At the end of the class you’ll walk away with the pieces that you make, plus a personal collage-making toolkit so you can continue your exploration of the medium. Workshop fee includes materials. Please, no attendees younger than the age of 16. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided, feel free to bring your own as well.
